Visiting Teachers from Spain Bring Language and Culture to Walla Walla Classrooms October 7, 2026 Two educators from Spain are spending the 2026-27 school year in Walla Walla, bringing authentic Spanish language and culture into local elementary classrooms through the Visiting Teachers from Spain Program. MarĂa Ăngeles Ruiz RuipĂ©rez, from Quintanar del Rey, Spain, is serving as a Spanish Language Assistant at Green Park Elementary, while Noelia LĂłpez de la Ossa, from AlcalĂĄ de Henares, Spain, is supporting students at Edison Elementary. The program promotes cultural exchange by giving American students opportunities to learn Spanish and experience the culture directly from native speakers. At the same time, the visiting educators gain firsthand experience with American culture, strengthen their English-language skills and develop experiences they can take back to Spain to promote greater mutual understanding. MarĂa and Noelia are working alongside teachers and students Monday through Thursday. Their roles include providing cultural activities and experiences, supporting Spanish-language activities and conversation opportunities, presenting to classes and participating in faculty meetings. They may also assist with classroom materials, activities and school events, as well as participate in field trips, clubs and other aspects of school and community life. As language assistants, they do not independently teach classes, substitute for teachers, grade student work or supervise students. Instead, they work in partnership with staff to enhance students' exposure to Spanish language and culture, providing an authentic connection that complements Walla Walla Public Schools' dual-language programming. âThey will provide an incredible opportunity for our students to access Spanish language and culture, and at the same time the visitors can experience our amazing state and improve their English,â said Dr. Julie Perron, Director of Equity and Dual Language Programs. The exchange extends beyond the classroom. MarĂa and Noelia have Fridays available to explore the Walla Walla Valley and surrounding region, giving them opportunities to experience local communities, traditions and attractions firsthand. Both visiting educators are living with host families who work for Walla Walla Public Schools, providing another meaningful opportunity to experience life in the Walla Walla community. Through the Visiting Teachers from Spain Program, Walla Walla students gain more than Spanish-language practice, they gain a personal connection to another country and culture, while MarĂa and Noelia become part of the Walla Walla community and build experiences that will stay with them long after the school year ends.
