Walla Walla Schools Closed August 13 for SEL Training

πŸ”Š Listen Β· narrated by Aiden

Walla Walla Public Schools will close district offices and all schools on August 13, 2026, for a full-day professional learning conference on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) training. The event, called the SEL Summit, will feature staff members mirroring student schedules with 54-minute sessions and six-minute passing periods, plus riding school buses to understand student routines. State law requires SEL training every other year, and the district says this year's event fulfills that requirement through an immersive approach.

More than 40 breakout sessions will cover strategies for student success, and two student panel discussions will feature students sharing their school experiences. Technology Integration Specialist Carrie LaRoy, the event lead, said the summit aims to build empathy and ensure students feel supported. The district says this training sets a positive tone for the upcoming school year.
